Redhead Reading

I'm a librarian-in-training who loves history and literature.

Grasshopper Jungle

Grasshopper Jungle - Andrew Smith I would have never read this ordinarily, but I ran out of audiobooks and joined the SYNC free audiobook program and this was the first one they sent me.

Pretty crazy book!! The frequent repetition of facts bugged me. There were several laugh-out-loud moments in the book.

Explore the Bible (ETB) - Matthew: Sermon on the Mount [Vol 7] (Member Book)

Explore the Bible (ETB) - Matthew: Sermon on the Mount [Vol 7] (Member Book) - Greg Matte Read this July 9-September 8, 2016, but I actually put it down for about month in there.

I'll count this in my GR challenge if I need to at the end of the year.

This is an OK study, but it wasn't that great for me.

Crocodile on the Sandbank

Crocodile on the Sandbank - Elizabeth Peters An absolutely charming book! I'm so glad I listened to this. Amelia is no-nonsense and I love it! She and Emerson definitely get OTP status.

A great cast of characters and a wonderful setting.

Emily: The Diary of a Hard-Worked Woman

Emily: The Diary of a Hard-Worked Woman - Emily French, Janet Lecompte From a historian perspective, this book is amazing because diaries about the everyday life of an average person are hard to find. From a reader perspective, this book dragged considerably and it took me a solid 3 weeks to finish its 166 pages. It's not exciting in any way--it details Emily's moves around Colorado to new jobs, her time at those jobs (mostly housekeeping positions), and her issues with her children and ex-husband. She's also extremely religious, starting each entry with a Bible verse.

Can't say I recommend it, unless you have a strong interest in diaries and/or women in the West.

Gone Girl

Gone Girl - Gillian Flynn It was weird and I didn't really like any of the characters. I felt sorry at the ending--wasn't worth 500 pages really.

Pride and Prejudice

Pride and Prejudice - Margaret Drabble, Jane Austen My third time to read this book and I absolutely adored it of course. I've been listening to the podcast In Want of a Wife along with it and it's great to have good commentary. I particularly love the last chapter!!

Being of Two Minds

Being of Two Minds - Pamela F. Service Y'all I was lying awake 2 nights ago and this book popped into my head because I remembered that the kidnapping in this book took place when Connie was chilling in Rudolph's mind while he was asleep. And I made it my quest to find out the name of it, and Google helped me out. I probably read this book in like 1997. Holllla for weird late-night thoughts.

The Liars' Club

The Liars' Club - Mary Karr This is an incredibly sad book and I found myself having to stop after small chunks just because it was too depressing to continue. But it's also extremely well-written and I see why Mary Karr is seen as the master of memoir. Her ability to remember details draws you into the story, almost like you are present while the scene is actually happening.

A Midsummer Night's Dream (Timeless Shakespeare)

A Midsummer Night's Dream (Timeless Shakespeare) - Emily Hutchinson, William Shakespeare The last time I read this was in 9th grade Pre-AP English back in Fall 2005. I had to do an oral report about it where I dressed up in an Elizabethan outfit. I enjoyed my re-read and listening to it while reading helped a lot. I also used No Fear Shakespeare too because I'm not in school anymore and 1500s English is hard sometimes. Nice way to pass an evening!

The Upper Room Disciplines: A Book of Daily Devotions

The Upper Room Disciplines: A Book of Daily Devotions - Various Read for work March-April 2016

The Upper Room Disciplines

The Upper Room Disciplines - Rita Collett Read for work February-March 2016

The Egg

The Egg - Andy Weir I read this on March 30, 2016. It had an interesting premise. Won't count it in my Reading Challenge since it's not a book.

Annie's Day

Annie's Day - Andy Weir I read this on March 30, 2016. It was a cute short story with a surprise at the end! I won't count it in my Reading Challenge since it's not a book.

Diary of an AssCan: A Mark Watney Short Story

Diary of an AssCan: A Mark Watney Short Story - Andy Weir I read this on March 29, 2016 in like 5 minutes. I'm not going to count it in my reading challenge because it's not a book. It was a nice way to kill a few minutes though!

The Martian

The Martian - Andy Weir I felt like there was too much scientific description in this book and a lot of it I just skimmed.

On the other hand, I also stayed up late on a work night to find out if he lived or died so it was a compelling story where you cared what happened.

I thought I was going to think Mark was a jerk, but I didn't think he was that rude.

I think I'll enjoy the movie a lot because it'll have all of the story and none of the science stuff.

The Narnian: The Life and Imagination of C. S. Lewis

The Narnian: The Life and Imagination of C. S. Lewis - Alan Jacobs An interesting biography of C. S. Lewis that focuses on his intellectual shifts throughout life and the intellectual issues that influenced his work. I found the beginning and ending engrossing, but the middle 4 or 5 chapters dragged significantly for me.
